LANDSLIDE ON RAILROAD TUZLA – ZVORNIK

Abstract

On the railroad Tuzla – Zvornik, on stacionage km 41+150 – km 41+200, there is a landslide on the left cut, 50 m before the entrance to the tunnel. There have been partial repairs over the years, but without any former detailed researches, so no proper solutions were found. Frequent repairs, like building shallow supporting walls, haven’t given proper results, hence the giant landslide myth was created. The position of the landslide is such that it is inadequate for certain types of research works and, for repair works it is necessary to change the regime of railroad traffic.


By translated geotechnical researches it has been stated, the landslide is forming on clay slates which represent terrain substrate. These are very affected by atmospheric influences. They are very erosive, easily broken and crushed. Simply put, they are unwanted, in an engineer-geological sense. In the roofing area, there are gravel-sand-clay sediments, over which there is topsoil. In natural state conditions they are stable, but when cutting the dip, especially in the presence of atmospheric precipitations, the natural balance is then tipped and the sliding process is activated.
